Douglas Corporation on the Isle of Man
Douglas Corporation on the Isle of Man is currently working closely with EnCams (formerly the Tidy Britain Group) on a project which aims to find out how and why litter ends up on the town’s streets. This will help the Corporation to target the sources of litter in addition to simply clearing it up. The research has highlighted the problem of smoking related litter. It is important to stop this litter at source because it is difficult to brush up as it tends to get stuck in cracks and corners.
The main accumulations of smoking related litter tend to be found at building entrances where smokers stand during their cigarette breaks. The Corporation is asking Chamber of Commerce members to look after their part of the town.
Two successful solutions to this problem have been found by providing:
• dedicated bins for smoking related litter.
• Stubbi pouches which are portable fireproof ashtrays to staff.

Ben Sparks, who works on a flower stall on Holloway Road, Islington gladly accepted a free stubbie. He said, " I didn't know it was against the law to throw a cigarette on the floor. If it keeps the streets clean it can only be for the best. I do smoke myself and I've got a stubbie now and I've already used it."

Premises that have taken action to be smoke free before the ban…
Chapter Arts Centre
Chapter Arts Centre decided to become smoke free after a consultation with staff and customers. There was, overwhelming support for the smoking ban. The arts centre went through a 3 month advertising campaign before the ban was introduced, and created an outdoor heated patio area with bins and ashtrays. Bins were also placed outside the front entrance to alleviate the anticipated litter problems. Chapter Arts Centre budgeted for a reduction in trade following the ban, and this did happen for about one week, ever since trade has been steadily increasing. The centre found that initially there was an increase in smoking related litter, but this is no longer a problem. Carol Jones Marketing manager, Chapter Arts Centre.
Aberdovey Golf Club
Aberdovey Golf Club has provided a balcony for smokers with four smokers outposts – purchased from the No Butts bin company. They haven’t had any major problems with litter since the introduction of the ban and the bins. John Griffiths stated that he didn’t think the ban had done any harm to business.
Trearddur Bay Hotel
